Cleaning text usually means one specific thing: getting rid of characters you can't see but a form, a script or a search box very much can. This free tool does that in your browser — paste, and it shows you what's hiding before it removes anything. It is also the fastest way to clean text AI tools hand you: reply text from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and the rest all carry the same kind of invisible passenger characters.

How to clean text in three steps
- Paste it. Drop your text into the box above — from a chat reply, a document, an email, anywhere. Nothing uploads; the check starts the moment the text lands in the box, on your own machine.
- Read what's there. A line appears above the box telling you how many hidden characters it found and how many characters your text contains, with a small table naming each type. If it says "Clean", there is nothing to remove and you can copy your text straight back out.
- Clean it, then copy. One click replaces the box with the cleaned version and switches on the Copy button. Paste the result wherever it was headed — a form, a spreadsheet cell, a code file — and it behaves like ordinary typed text, because that's now exactly what it is.
Clean text AI tools hand you
When people search "clean text ai" they usually mean one thing: text copied out of an AI chat window that is behaving strangely once it lands somewhere else. That happens because chat interfaces render their replies with characters you never see — zero-width spaces between words, curly quotes, an em dash where you'd have typed a hyphen. Copy the reply and those characters copy with it, regardless of which assistant produced the text. This page cleans all of it the same way. If you know exactly which assistant your text came from and want the explanation written for that one specifically, the same cleaner sits behind dedicated pages for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini — only the framing changes, not the tool.
Clean text before it goes into a form, a spreadsheet or a CMS
- Job applications and forms. Some application-tracking systems silently drop or reject a field that contains a character they don't recognise, and a pasted cover letter is a common source of exactly that.
- Spreadsheets. A byte-order mark at the start of a pasted block can push every value in a row into the wrong column, or make the first cell fail a validation rule that every other cell passes.
- A CMS or blog editor. Curly quotes and en dashes pasted straight from Word can break a shortcode or a piece of template syntax that expects a plain straight quote.
- Code and config files. A zero-width space inside a variable name or a JSON key compiles into nothing you can see and breaks the build with an error that points at a line that looks completely fine.
What "clean" does not include here
This tool does not collapse extra spaces, remove blank lines or change letter case — that is a different, more general kind of text cleaning, covered on the text cleaner page. What it does is narrower and, for most of the problems above, is actually the one that matters: it removes what you cannot see, without touching anything you typed on purpose.

What does "clean text ai" mean, and does this tool do it?
It means cleaning text that came out of an AI chat assistant — removing the invisible characters and smart punctuation the chat interface added while rendering the reply. Yes, that is exactly what this tool does, for any assistant, in your browser.
Do I need a different tool for ChatGPT text specifically?
No. The cleaner matches characters, not sources, so it treats ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek and Perplexity text identically. The dedicated brand pages exist for the explanation, not a different tool.
Does cleaning text remove AI-detection markers?
It removes invisible characters, not word choice. A statistical watermark such as SynthID lives entirely in which words were picked, so no character cleaner — this one included — can remove it without rewriting the text.
Can I clean text on my phone?
Yes. The page is a plain text box and two buttons — there is nothing to install, and it works the same on a phone browser as on a desktop one.
Does it work on languages other than English?
Yes, and it is deliberate about it: characters that are genuine spelling in Persian, Arabic and the Indic scripts — such as the zero-width non-joiner — are left in place. The same character is only removed when it sits between ordinary Latin letters, which is where it is actually copy-paste debris.
What this tool cannot remove
There are two different things people call an "AI watermark".
- Invisible and typographic characters. This tool removes named characters that carry no visible glyph at all, as defined by the Unicode standard — not a number we made up. It also turns different space variants, including the narrow no-break space, into an ordinary space. Curly quotes and dashes go through a separate, optional step — typographic replacements, switched on by default; turn that option off and they stay exactly as typed. It also clears the three Unicode private-use ranges, including the tag range U+E0000–U+E007F used to hide data in plain text — those ranges hold no standard characters of their own, so we describe them rather than dress them up as a character count.
- A statistical watermark in the word choice itself. Google's SynthID-Text, live in Gemini since May 2024, is documented to change no characters at all, so no character cleaner — ours included — has anything to catch. Anthropic has marked Claude's output the same way since 2 August 2026, to comply with the EU AI Act, but its own explanation (support.claude.com) confirms only that the mark exists, not how it works — so we can't promise it is built the same way SynthID is. What we can say: a character cleaner like this one only ever touches Unicode characters, and no watermark that relied on those would survive an ordinary copy-paste, so there is nothing here for it to remove either way. As of 10 September 2026, OpenAI's own content-provenance page lists a text watermark for neither ChatGPT nor its API.
If a tool promises to strip "the AI watermark" without making this distinction, it is describing the first thing while letting you believe it does the second.
