What comes across when you copy from Grok
Where you copy from matters more with Grok than with most assistants, because it answers in two very different places:
- On X. Tag @grok in a reply and the answer comes back as an ordinary post. X does not render markdown there, so asterisks meant as bold can show up as literal asterisks, and links are shortened to t.co addresses. Both are visible text; the cleaner leaves them alone, and you fix them by hand.
- On grok.com and in the app. A normal chat window that renders markdown, so a select-and-copy gives you plain text and the copy button gives you the markdown source.
In both places the model's own typography comes along: em dashes, often without spaces around them, and curly quotes. Invisible characters are not something Grok is known for; if the cleaner finds any, they most likely came from text that was pasted into the conversation.
What the cleaner did with a Grok-style paste

With the option off nothing changed. The unspaced dash is the one spot worth a second look after cleaning, because a hyphen between two words reads differently from a dash. This was a test string we wrote to match that pattern, not a captured reply; the counts are what this page's own cleaner reported when we ran it on 2 October 2026.

Why does my text break my CMS or code editor?
Invisible characters survive a copy-paste but are not what they look like. A zero-width space inside a variable name breaks the code, a non-breaking space breaks a search, and a smart quote breaks a string literal. Nothing looks wrong on screen, which is what makes it hard to find.

What this tool cannot remove
It removes named invisible characters (Unicode ), turns space variants into an ordinary space and, if you leave the option on, makes typographic replacements. It also clears the three private-use ranges, including the tag range U+E0000: U+E007F, and it treats text from a PDF, Word or a web page exactly like text from an assistant. It cannot touch statistical watermarks such as Google's SynthID, which live in the choice of words, not in any character, so no character cleaner can. We found no text watermark that xAI has announced for Grok (checked 10 October 2026), so there is nothing beyond characters to remove from its text.
