Free ChatGPT Watermark Remover

OpenAI has announced a statistical text watermark for ChatGPT that lives in the choice of words, so this cleaner cannot touch it; what it does find are the characters you did not type: narrow no-break and non-breaking spaces, curly quotes, em dashes. Paste it here to see each one named and counted, then clean it. The cleaner runs entirely in your browser: no upload, no account, no limit, and your visible words come back as they were.

Last updated: September 2026

Cleaning happens in your browser: that text never leaves this page, and there is no upload, no account and no limit. Rewrite is the exception: that one sends your text to our server.

How it works

  1. Paste the reply into the box above, straight out of the chat window. The check runs the moment the text lands there: no upload, no button first, no account.
  2. See the count per character type. One line gives the total ("Found 6 hidden characters in 240 characters"); the table under it names each type, Zero Width Space, Non-Breaking Space, Soft Hyphen, with how many of each. The preview below shows your own text with every hidden character in place, written out as its code point.
  3. Press Clean text and copy the result. The cleaned version replaces what is in the box, the Copy result button switches on, and your sentences come back word for word as they were.

What ChatGPT actually leaves behind

Three kinds of thing turn up in a ChatGPT paste, and none of them is a watermark:

Which invisible characters this removes

These are the ones that turn up in a copied chat reply, with the code point of each so you can look it up yourself. The tool checks named characters in total, plus the three private-use ranges: the table is the part you will actually meet.

What the cleaner did with a ChatGPT-style paste

We ran this page's cleaner on a heading and one sentence written the way the GPT-5 reports describe: three narrow no-break spaces, an em dash and a pair of curly quotes.

Found by the cleanerCountAfter cleaning
Narrow No-Break Space (U+202F)3three ordinary spaces
Em Dash (U+2014)1a plain hyphen, only with the quotes-and-dashes option on
Curly double quotes (U+201C, U+201D)2straight quotes, same option
## heading markupnot countedleft exactly as it was

With the option off, only the three spaces change; the words are identical either way, and a second run finds nothing. This was a test string we wrote to match that pattern, not a captured reply; the counts are what this page's own cleaner reported when we ran it on 2 October 2026.

Does ChatGPT leave a watermark?

Does ChatGPT leave a watermark in its text? OpenAI announced one in October 2026, called textGrain: it slightly changes the model's word choices to create a statistical pattern that a detector can measure later. It starts in the EU, API developers can opt in (it is off by default), and access to the detector is limited to approved researchers and expert organizations (as reported by the press; OpenAI's own content-provenance page lists C2PA and SynthID for images and SynthID for audio and says text verification is currently available only to approved organizations, checked 10 October 2026). The mark is not made of characters, so there is no hidden character to detect ChatGPT by, and the em dash is a style habit, not a marker. Pictures ChatGPT generates are a separate matter: they carry C2PA metadata, which this text tool has nothing to do with. On this page, removing a ChatGPT watermark means removing the spacing and punctuation described above, nothing more. The invisible watermark people usually mean is statistical: a pattern in the word choices, not a hidden character. That is the difference between watermark text in the statistical sense and the invisible characters that come along in a paste; this page finds only the second kind. Watermarking ChatGPT text starts in the EU and is off by default for API developers, as reported by the press. An AI image watermark is a separate matter from the characters in a text paste.

Using it on a ChatGPT paste

How to remove watermark clutter from a ChatGPT reply: paste it, read the table, press Clean text. It is a tool that finds and strips invisible Unicode characters, free and with no sign-up, running in your browser tab. That makes it a watermark remover free online, and a watermark remover online free of any sign-up. The AI watermark remover free version is the whole tool. There is no watermark remover AI model behind the Clean button either, only character matching. Any cleaner should leave the words alone, and so does this one. If your draft is in Word, paste it here first and back into Word afterwards; Word's autocorrect adds some of the same characters itself, such as curly quotes and non-breaking spaces after abbreviations. It also earns its keep before an import: a narrow no-break space inside a CSV value or in a code editor is exactly what breaks a parser, and a clean paste fixes that, because invisible characters survive a copy-paste but are not what they look like. The same characters come out of a PDF, Word or Google Docs; the tool scans for characters, not sources, so text from Claude or Gemini gets the same treatment. What it will not do is change how the text reads: it cannot remove AI text style, and it cannot make text sound less AI-written. That is how to remove ChatGPT watermarks in the only sense this tool supports: paste the reply, read the table, press Clean text.

You get the whole tool free of charge: no card, no trial, and nothing extra to open beyond the paste box shown above. The obvious question in every watermark remover Reddit thread is whether this kind of tool works at all, or is snake oil. It works because there's something real to find: ordinary invisible characters, named and counted before anything is removed.

All assistants, one tool

The cleaner is the same on every page: it matches characters, not sources. See the full list of what it removes.

Questions

Does this remove the AI watermark from my text?

A ChatGPT text watermark is statistical and not made of characters, so this tool does not remove it. What it removes is the invisible and unusual characters that come along in a paste, mostly the narrow no-break and non-breaking spaces described above, without touching your words. There is a separate Rewrite button for people who want their wording changed; that is a writing aid, not a way around detection.

How to remove ChatGPT watermark in text I copied from a chat?

Paste it into the box above. The check runs as soon as the text lands, names each hidden character it finds and counts it. Press Clean text and copy the result; your visible words stay exactly as they were.

How to remove ChatGPT watermark in Word documents?

Copy the text out of Word, paste it here, clean it and paste it back. Word's autocorrect adds curly quotes and non-breaking spaces itself, so some of those characters will reappear if you retype or autocorrect afterwards.

How to remove watermark from ChatGPT text that went through Google Docs?

Copy the text out of the document and paste it here. Google Docs does not show a non-breaking space as anything special, so the count shows what is really in it. Only characters can be removed; there is nothing else to strip.

Can I make ChatGPT remove watermark characters from its own reply?

Asking is not a check: you cannot tell from the screen whether a gap is a normal space. Paste the reply here instead and let the table show each character and its code point.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

The cleaner runs entirely in your browser: that text never leaves the page, there is no account, and there is no limit on how much you clean. The separate Rewrite button is the one exception: it sends your text to our server, which passes it to Anthropic, whose AI model rewrites it. Only Anthropic receives it, to rewrite it, and Anthropic does not train its models on it. We keep no copy of your text or the rewrite.

Does the cleaner change my wording?

No. It deletes characters that have no visible shape and turns an unusual space into an ordinary one. Every word you can see stays where it was, spelled the way it was: run it twice and the second pass finds nothing left. Only the separate Rewrite button changes wording, and only when you press it.

Will it strip markdown, bold or links?

No. If you used ChatGPT's copy button you pasted markdown, and the ## and ** marks are visible characters, so they stay; delete them yourself or paste into an editor that renders markdown. If you selected and copied the rendered reply instead, the plain-text box already dropped bold, italics and links at the moment of paste. The one visible change the tool can make is turning curly quotes and em dashes into straight quotes and a plain hyphen, and the checkbox above switches that off.

Can an AI detector still tell?

Probably, and that is not what this is for. AI detectors look at sentence rhythm and word choice, not at invisible characters, so a clean paste does not fool one. This tool is for text that has to work, in a CMS field, a form, a code file, a spreadsheet, not for hiding where the text came from.

Is it free, and how do I use it?

Yes, free with no sign-up and no daily limit. Paste the text you copied from ChatGPT into the box above, check what it found, and press Clean text; your words come back exactly as they were.

How do I check a ChatGPT text in Word or Google Docs?

Copy it out of the document and paste it here rather than trying to spot anything by eye. Word and Google Docs don't show a non-breaking space or a narrow no-break space as anything special, so the count and the table above are the quickest way to see what is in it, whichever program the text passed through.

Can this remove a watermark from a photo?

No, this page only reads and writes plain text. Can ChatGPT remove watermarks from photos? That is a question about ChatGPT's own image tools. If you arrived here from an image search or a picture search because you want to remove watermarks from your own pictures, the tool you want is WatermarkNinja's AI watermark remover, the image watermark remover in this family (a watermark remover image tool that works on pixels): it paints over a mark and rebuilds the background, and it works as a watermark remover from video frames you have paused and saved as a still. A watermark remover video tool that cleans a whole clip is not something either site offers, and a watermark remover PDF tool is a different job again.

Is there a ChatGPT extension, or a chatgpt watermarks remover on GitHub?

Not from us: no browser extension and no public repo. To remove ChatGPT watermark characters, this web page is the whole tool: paste, clean, copy.

Related tools

One cleaner runs behind all of these pages, with one shared list of named characters and one Clean button. Only the explanation around it changes, so pick whichever matches where your text came from.

What this tool cannot remove

It removes named invisible characters (Unicode ), turns space variants into an ordinary space and, if you leave the option on, makes typographic replacements. It also clears the three private-use ranges, including the tag range U+E0000: U+E007F, and it treats text from a PDF, Word or a web page exactly like text from an assistant. It cannot touch statistical watermarks such as Google's SynthID, which live in the choice of words, not in any character, so no character cleaner can. OpenAI announced a statistical text watermark for ChatGPT in October 2026 (EU first, API opt-in), and no character cleaner will reach it; its own content-provenance page lists C2PA and SynthID for images and SynthID for audio and says text verification is currently available only to approved organizations (checked 10 October 2026). Sources we checked: Anthropic at support.claude.com, and OpenAI's content-provenance page.
